Director's Notes
Why these two stories told in this darkly humorous way together, now… by these students?
Both are stories about the ramifications of choices, choices that affect the peoplewho make them, and the world around them. How much ambition is too much? Should I opt out, give up, give in, or fight for what is right? Are my wants more important than others’ needs? These are the same choices that our students will encounter as they become adults and leave the protective bubble that is academia. Humans are as frail and fractured as they were in Shakespeare’s day; they still grapple with questions of social morality and have to deal with the politics of power. But we are now submerged in a relentless swamp of social media, filled with bad news and subterfuge. It is hard to get above the rancid stench to get a breath.
So … let’s lighten it up and shine some illuminating humour on these ageless questions that are still politically and socially relevant 400 years later. Let us entertain you, but also let us intrigue and inspire you. Let us watch these incredibly willing, engaged and intelligent young artists bring their time, talents and tenacity to these tragedies. Let them shine new light on these old stories. Perhaps in this exploration of what can be found humorous about revenge, greed and dishonesty, we will discover what is truly worth fighting, sacrificing, and
striving for.
Enjoy, Shakey
